On June 16, with the unloading of the first truck of rockfill materials, China Huadian Lawa Hydropower Station on the upper reaches of Jinsha River, officially started dam pouring, which is also the highest dam of the same type in the world among hydropower projects under construction and already built.
The Lawa Hydropower Station on the upper reaches of Jinsha River of China Huadian Corporation is located in Batang County of Sichuan Province and Markam County of Tibet, with an installed capacity of 2 million kilowatts. The concrete faced rockfill dam poured this time has a total filling volume of 15 million cubic meters, a dam crest elevation of 2709 meters, and a maximum dam height of 239 meters. It is currently the highest faced rockfill dam in the world. The project has successfully solved world-class technical problems such as building weirs on deep overburden of barrier lake deposits, which will provide reference experience for subsequent construction of major hydropower projects such as the downstream of the the Yarlung Zangbo River. After the completion of the power station, it is expected that the average annual power generation will be 9.089 billion kilowatt hours, saving 2.82 million tons of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 6.85 million tons per year.
