In China, with higher demand for electric power, the utilization of wind energy expands to the eastern and southern areas where the wind speed is relatively lower. In order to further exploit the wind energy resources, building higher towers and thus increasing the wind speed at the hub vortices is one of the important ways out. At present, the traditional wind turbine tower is mainly of steel structure. When the steel tower exceeds 90 meters high, its vibration amplitude of the tower will increase and frequency decrease. Meanwhile the tower body will show up the characteristics of "flexibility", which will cause serious electric power loss and security issues. Therefore, the traditional steel tower cannot solve the problem of electric power generation in low wind speed area in China.
To promote the application of wind turbine tower in low wind speed area, TENSAM set up research team, carried out research and application of key technologies for 140 meter ultra high wind turbine tower. The project includes the calculation of the overall load, the design of the whole tower body, and the detail design of steel section, the precast and pre-stressed concrete section, application and promotion. The project successfully established the technology and construction process of 140m ultra high wind turbine hybrid structure tower in the aspects of design, production, transportation, hoisting, test and verification, and carried out engineering application and verification.

Accurate position of internal channels of pre-stressed steel bars
The 140 meter ultra high wind turbine hybrid tower developed in this project has realized the efficient utilization of wind resources in low wind speed and high shear area. The wind turbine hybrid tower adopts 55 m prefabricated pre-stressed concrete structure and 85 m steel structure, which optimizes the tower stiffness, improves the fatigue resistance and operation stability. The flat box foundation, connection between tower and foundation, prefabrication and assembly joint technology, large diameter and high precision mold, new assembly platform on site, and monitoring method developed by the project effectively improve the production efficiency and quality, and reduce the construction period and cost.
By December 15th, 2018, this technology has been applied in many projects, such as East Gaoyou wind farm in Jiangsu Province and Jindi wind farm in Hua County, Henan Province, and has showed remarkable social and economic benefits. This project promotes the product upgrading of wind turbine tower industry, and leads the innovation of wind turbine hybrid tower design technology and the upgrading of pre-stressed technology and prefabricated technology.
