This year marks the 8th anniversary of the "The Belt and Road" initiative. In the past eight years, China has adhered to the principle of extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits, taking the“hardware connectivity”in infrastructure as an important orientation,“software connectivity” in institutions and rules as an important support, while taking the "heart connectivity" of the nation and people as an important foundation, for the purpose of seeking high-quality Belt and Road cooperation and achieving fruitful achievements.
By December 2021, China had signed more than 200 cooperation documents with 145 countries and 32 international organizations to build“ The Belt and Road” initiative. A number of the key projects have made substantial progress, making important contributions to local economic development and people's livelihood. How are these projects going now? Pakistan | Gwadar Port
Gwadar Port is one of the pillar projects of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. In 2013, China Overseas Ports Holding Company Limited (COPHC) obtained the right to operate Gwadar Port and Free Zone, and began to transform Gwadar Port in all aspects including ecological conservation from scratch. After years of endeavors, Gwadar Port now looks like a "green pearl" on a "yellow sand painting".
Laos | China-Laos Railway
China-Laos Railway is an international railway directly connected with China's railway network. The line starts from Kunming, Yunnan Province in the north, passes through China Mohan Port and Laos Boten Port, enters the northern part of Laos, and finally reaches Vientiane, Laos, with a total length of 1035 kilometers.
Malaysia | Kuantan Industrial Park (MCKIP)
Malaysia-China Kuantan Industrial Park (MCKIP) located in Pahang State, Malaysia and China-Malaysia Qinzhou Industrial Park located in Guangxi have jointly created a new international cooperation model of "Two Countries, Two Parks".
Russia | Moscow Metro
In January, 2017, China Railway Construction Corporation Limited (CRCC)won the bid for the southwest section of the third transfer loop of Moscow Metro, with a total length of 5.4 kilometers, including Aminyevo Station, Michurinsky Station and Vernadski Station and nine shield tunnel construction tasks, which was also the first time that Russia has introduced Chinese enterprises in the field of subway construction. On December 7th, 2021, the southwest section of the third transfer loop of Moscow Metro, which was built by CRCC, was put into operation.
Kenya | Nairobi Railway
Nairobi Railway, which connects Mombasa, the largest port in East Africa, and Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, was opened on May 31, 2017. With a total length of about 480 kilometers, the railway is the first railway built in Kenya since its independence. It is a modern railway built with Chinese standards, Chinese technology and Chinese equipment.
Egypt |Central Business District of the New Administrative Capital Project
The Central Business District of the New Administrative Capital Project, undertaken by China State Construction Engineering Corporation's (CSCEC) Egypt branch, is located about 50 kilometers east of Cairo, with a total area of about 505,000 square meters, including 20 high-rise buildings and supporting municipal works. In the whole CBD project, the most striking thing is the sign tower project which become "the tallest building in Africa". In August this year, the last steel beam of the tower was accurately docked in place, and the steel structure was successfully capped. The structural height of the sign tower project is 373.2m, and the highest point of the tower crown is 385.8m.
Jordan | Oil Shale-fired Attarat Power Plant Project
Oil Shale-fired Attarat Power Plant Project in Jordan is a key project of China-Jordanian "The Belt and Road” initiative cooperation, including two 235 MW oil shale power stations, which is expected to become the largest power station in Jordan after completion. It is estimated that after the project is put into operation, the annual power supply will reach 3.7 billion kWh, which can meet about 15% of Jordan's electricity demand.
Senegal | Competitive Wrestling Field Project
Senegal competitive wrestling field, located in the suburb of Dakar, is the largest aid project of China in Senegal. On July 22nd, 2018, the Senegalese competitive wrestling field symbolizing China-Serbia friendship was officially handed over. This landmark building covers an area of about 18,000 square meters and can accommodate 20,000 spectators at the same time. It is the first modern wrestling field in Africa.
Israel | Tel Aviv Light Rail
Tel Aviv light rail red line system project was undertaken by China Railway Tunnel Group Co., Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiaries of CRCC and a joint venture company established by China Railway Electrification Bureau Group Co., Ltd. This project is the first light rail line in Tel Aviv rail transit planning, with a total length of 23.5 kilometers. It is planned to be officially opened for operation in 2022.
